Little Lon - Melbourne Museum - 2008

In mid-2007, Show Works tendered to recreate an area of 1870's Melbourne known as Little Lon. This was a colourful part of "Marvellous Melbourne" which played host to the down trodden, or just down on their luck of one of the 19th centuries most affluent and bustling cities.

Using modern building materials along with traditional building methods, Show Works proceeded to recreate 2 houses that may have been in existence at this time. Whilst not replicating a precise address in Little Lon, one of the houses may have been occupied by a poor but hard working tradesman's family while the other more run down house could have played host to a family beyond hope. Show Works had a bare concrete slab to work from and to it added creaking floor boards, peeling weatherboards, a rusting corrugated iron roof, bluestone paving and the entire range of fittings and fixtures needed to create the illusion of a house that the owners may have left only a few minutes earlier. These sort of installation jobs only come along occasionally and when they do Show Works is delighted to be involved.
